FREIGHT FARM AT CITY MISSION – City Mission of Schenectady

FRESH PRODUCE VIA FREIGHT FARM

Through a trusted partnership with SEFCU, City Mission received a Freight Farm, located right next to the Administration building on our campus. Although it merely appears as a 40-foot shipping container, this container has the capacity to produce hundreds of heads of lettuce and other vegetables each week using hydroponic technology and LED lights.

The fresh produce grown in the farm goes directly toward feeding our residents as well as members of the community. Our Dining Center utilizes the lettuce and vegetables in their meal services, and community members have access to the lettuce during our Farm Stand service each week. The controlled environment of the Freight Farm expands the impact on residents and the community as it allows for fresh produce to be grown, harvested, and distributed year-round!

The ability to grow and supply fresh produce right on our campus is highly impactful in regard to the health and wellness initiative that has been of priority here at City Mission! This ability also grants residents and community members access to healthy, fresh, and nutritious alternatives that will better serve their overall health and equip them to maintain a healthier, well-balanced lifestyle.
